If Clauses หรือ Conditional Sentences
คือ ประโยคที่มีข้อความแสดงเงื่อนไข (conditions) หรือการสมมติ ซึ่งประกอบด้วยประโยคเล็ก 2 ประโยครวมกัน และเชื่อมด้วย conjunction "if" ประโยคที่นำหน้าด้วย if แสดงเงื่อนไข เราเรียกว่า if-clause และประโยคที่แสเงผลเงื่อนไขนั้น เราเรียกว่า main clause

       If it rains ,    I shall stay at home.
     (If-clause)          (main clause)

If + Present Simple , Future Simple
      (if-clause)           (main clause)   
If + Past Simple ,   S + would + V1  
(if-clause)                (main clause)

If + Past Perfect ,    S+would/should + have +V3
 (If- clause)                 (main clause)

                    Conditional Sentences แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ชนิด คือ

                                     1. TYPE ONE      เป็นการสมมติถึงเหตุการณ์ในปัจจุบันหรืออนาคต
                 แสดงเงื่อนไขที่น่าจะเป็นไปได้ (possible condition)
                               
           

                                        

     
                                         If he goes to London , he will meet his old friend.


                                   2. TYPE TWO     เป็นการสมมติในปัจจุบันที่บอกความสงสัย (doubt)
                                           แสดงเงื่อนไขที่ไม่น่าจะเป็นไปได้   (impossible condition)




                                                If I were you , I would go to study abroad.

                                      3. TYPE THREE เป็นการสมมติในอดีต แสดงเงื่อนไขที่ไม่อาจเป็นไปได้เลย
                                            และตรงกันข้ามกับความเป็นจริงในอดีต




                                         If I had known your arrival , I would have met you at the airport.
                      If you had gone to party last night , you would have seen your girlfriend.

                   หมายเหตุ : Conditional Sentences จะขึ้นต้นด้วยประโยค If-Clause หรือ Main Clause ก็ได้ เช่น
                                       If I had some money , I would go abroad.
                                       I would go abraod if I had some money.
