A. Countable
Noun คือ นามที่นับนับได้ ได้แก่ นามที่มีรูปร่าง
นับเป็นชิ้นได้ จะใช้ a , an นำหน้าเมื่อไม่ชี้เฉพาะเจาะจง และสามารถทำเป็นพหูพจน์ได้
คือ อาจเติมคำ two, three, four, etc. ลงหน้าคำนามนั้นได้ เช่น two tables, three

Nouns แบ่งเป็น
2 ชนิด คือ
1.
Common Nouns (นามทั่วไปหรือสามานยนาม) เป็นได้ทั้งเอกพจน์และพหูพจน์
เช่น city, baby, man, desk, ect..
2.
Collective Nouns (สมุหนาม) นามที่อยู่รวมกันเป็นหมู่ เป็นพวก เช่น herd,
flock, bunch, etc.
Collective
Nouns นี้บางคำ เช่น family, group, committee, class , jury, cabinet, etc.....
จะใช้กริยาเป็นเอกพจน์ก็ได้ย่อมแล้วแต่ความหมาย ถ้าหมายถึงกลุ่มเดียว (unit)
ก็ใช้กริยาเป็นเอกพจน์
ถ้าหมายถึงจำนวนแยกแยะรายตัวบุคคล
(individual) ก็ใช้กริยาเป็นพหูพจน์
The
committee has agreed on a plan. (คณะกรรมการทั้งคณะเห็นพ้องกันในแผนการ)
The
committee have not agreed on the plan. (คณะกรรมการแต่ละคนไม่มีความเห็นพ้องกันในแผนการ)
Collective
Nouns มักจะใช้รวมกับ Common Nouns ได้ เช่น

| a band of musicians(นักดนตรีคณะหนึ่ง) | a heap of stones (หินกองหนึ่ง) |

| a staff of teachers (ครูคณะหนึ่ง) | a flock of sheep (แกะฝูงหนึ่ง) |
| a shoal of fish (ปลาฝูงหนึ่ง) | a set of cards (ไพ่สำรับหนึ่ง) |
| a series of books (หนังสือชุดหนึ่ง) | a pair of shoes (รองเท้าคู่หนึ่ง) |
| a fleet of ships (เรือหมู่หนึ่ง) | a group of boys (เด็กกลุ่มหนึ่ง) |
| a gang of robbers (โจรหมู่หนึ่ง) | a herd of deer (กวางฝูงหนึ่ง) |
| a cluster of stars (ดาวกลุ่มหนึ่ง) | a basket of fruit (ผลไม้ตระกร้าหนึ่ง) |

1. Mass Nouns (หรือ material nouns) นามที่อยู่รวมกันเป้นหลุ่มเป็นก้อน แสดงความมากน้อยด้วยปริมาณ (quantity) ไม่ใช่จำนวน (number) เช่น water , air, meat ,coffee ,sugar ,salt, pork, ink, chalk, paper, butter, flour, rice,etc.
วิธีใช้ Mass Nouns
a) ใช้เดี่ยวๆ ได้เลย โดยไ่ม่ต้องไปรวมกับคำอื่น ไม่ต้องมี article นำหน้า ถ้าไม่เฉพาะเจาะจง และใช้กริยาเป็นเอกพจน์ เช่น
She drinks milk every morning.
Water is neccessary for life.
b) ใช้คำนามอื่นมาช่วย เมื่อต้องการทราบหน่วย โดยนับได้จากภาชนะที่บรรจุ หรือจำนวนน้ำหนัก เช่น
a bowl of ------- rice , sugar
a bottle of ------- ink, milk, water, beer
a cup of ------- tea , coffee
a bar of -------- soap ,chocolate
a jug of ---------water , milk
a tube of -------- toothpaste
a tin of -------- jam
a jar of ------- jam , water , honey
a sheet (piece) of ------ paper
an item of ---------- news
a piece of --------- news , furniture , information
a slice (piece) of --------- bread , ham
a loaf of -------------- bread
a kilo (pound) of -------- sugar , cheese , steak, etc.
ถ้าต้องการทำเป็นพหูพจน?ให้เติม s , es ที่นามซึ่งอยู่ข้างหน้า "of" เช่น
two pounds of sugar
five pieces of paper
c) ใช้กับคำ much , a lot of, plenty of, a great deal of, little , a little เมื่อพูดถึงปริมาณมากหรือน้อย เช่น
There is plenty of cheese in that shop.
much salt
little rice
a little tea
a lot of coffee
a great deal of steak
2. Abstract Nouns (อาการนาม) ได้แก่
a) นามที่แสดงสภาพ (state) เช่น poverty , richness, pleasure , etc
b) นามที่แสดงคุณสมบัติ (quality) เช่น beauty , honesty, kindness , cleverness, etc.
c) นามที่แสดงการกระทำ (action) เช่น movement , flight , revenge , etc.
ข้อสังเกต นามนับไม่ได้และนามพหูพจน์ไม่ต้องการ article เว้นแต่เป็นการชี้เฉพาะ ซึ่งต้องใช้ the นำหน้า เช่น
1. a) Air is neccessary for life.
b) The air in this room is fresh.
2. a) Books are good friends.
b) The books in the library was all new.
