หลักการใช้

       1. ใช้กับการกระทำที่เกิดขึ้นและสิ้นสุดลงแล้วในอดีต ซึ่งจะมีคำที่บอกเวลาในอดีตกำกับไว้อย่างชัดเจน ดังนี้ คือ
            yesterday (เมื่อวานนี้) , last night (week/month/ year/..etc.)(...ที่แล้ว) , at that time (ในตอนนั้น),
           formerly (เมื่อก่อน) , in the past (ในอดีต) ,  just now (เมื่อสักครู่นี้) , ago (ที่แล้ว), once (ครั้งหนึ่ง),
           in the old days (ในสมัยก่อน) , the day before yesterday (เมื่อวานซืน) , the previous day
           (วันก่อน),  in those days (ในสมัยนั้น) , the other day (วันก่อน) , a few minutes ago
           ( 2-3 นาทีที่ผ่านมา), in 1990 , etc...
            - They came to see me last Thursday.
            - Two days ago I asked you to do the report.
            - I didn't go to school yesterday.
            - Did you learn French last year?

      2. ใช้กับการกระทำอันเป็นนิสัยหรือเคยปฏิบัติมาในอดีต แต่ปัจจุบันไม่เกิดขึ้นแล้ว เช่น
           - John lived in Manchester when he was young.
               (He doesn't live there now and he is no longer young. A completed action and
               a completed state)
           - In the old days we could travel all over Bangkok by boat.
           - Did your father smoke when he was young?
           - No, he didn't.

      3. ใช้กับคำว่า used to ซึ่งแสดงถึงการกระทำอันเป็นนิสัย หรือเคยปฏิบัติมาแล้วในอดีต และในปัจจุบัน
           การกระทำอันนั้นมิได้เกิดขึ้นอีก
                       used to + V1 (= เคยมาแล้วในอดีต) เช่น
             - Mr. Smith used to teach in Japan. (But now he teaches in Thailand.)
             - In the past people used to travel on foot much more often.
             - You used to live in that house , didn't you?

       หมายเหตุ--- ประโยคที่มีคำว่า always, sometimes , often , usually , every day , etc...อาจจะเป็น
                            present หรือ past ก็ได้ ถ้าเป็น past จะต้องมีคำที่บอกเวลาในอดีตกำกับไว้ด้วย เช่น
                          - We usually learned English six hours a weeks when we were in M.3.
                          - She went to school every day last week.

      4. ใช้กับการกระทำในอดีต แสดงลำดับของความต่อเนื่องของเหตุการณ์ เช่น
                 - I opened my bag , took out some money and gave it to my brother.
                      หรือใช้กับการกระทำที่เกิดขึ้นพร้อมๆ กัน เช่น
                 - He took a bath and listened to the 6 o'clock news.

      5. ใช้กับ clause หลังสำนวน I would rather...... (ฉันอยากจะ...) , It's time ...... (ถึงเวลาแล้ว),
           It's about time ........(ถึงเวลาแล้ว) เช่น
                - I would rather you did your homework.
                - It's time the children went to bed.
